I SHOULD Exercise
by Louise Hay
Write I SHOULD at the top of a piece of paper.
List 5-6 ways to finish that sentence. Examples: I should keep the house
cleaner / I should call my parents more often / I should get out of bed earlier
every morning.
Read each sentence one at a time. Ask yourself "Why?" after each
sentence.
Every time we hear 'should', we are, in effect, saying 'wrong'. Either we are
wrong or we were wrong or we are going to be wrong. Replace 'should' with
'could'. Could gives us choice and we are never wrong.
Reread each item on the list but begin each sentence by saying,
"If I really wanted to, I could..." Example: If I really wanted to,
I could keep the house cleaner.
Ask yourself, "Why haven't I?"
What is there on the list that can now be dropped, with a sense of relief?
Begin releasing the feeling of being wrong due to not fitting someone else's
standards.
The Universe totally supports every thought we choose to think and believe.
We are all victims of victims; we can't be taught what is not known by our
parents, teachers, etc. Those people who 'did all that stuff to you' were just
as frightened and scared as you are.
The cure: Loving the Self. Learn to have a great respect for ourselves and a
gratitude for the miracle of our bodies and our minds.
Remember; you have been criticizing yourself for years and it hasn't worked!
